What is Pontic Greek? Pontic Greek (Ποντιακά, also called Romeika) is a Greek dialect spoken by Pontic Greeks – people whose ancestors lived on the southern coast of the Black Sea (ancient Pontus, now Turkey) for over 3,000 years. After the 1923 population exchange, most Pontic Greeks settled in Greece. Today there are about 300,000-500,000 speakers.
Unique Pontic letters: Pontic Greek preserves ancient Greek letters lost in Modern Greek: Ϙ/ϙ (koppa), Ϟ/ϟ (san), and Ϡ/ϡ (sampi). Pontic also has distinct phonology with nasal vowels and unique pronunciation patterns. It's one of the most archaic Greek dialects!
Perfect for: Pontic Greek speakers and descendants, researchers of Greek dialects, linguists studying archaic Greek features, anyone interested in Black Sea Greek heritage, and those documenting Pontic songs, stories, and traditions.
