What is Avestan? Avestan is an ancient Eastern Iranian language, the liturgical language of Zoroastrianism – one of the world's oldest monotheistic religions founded by prophet Zarathustra (Zoroaster). The Avesta contains the sacred texts including the Gathas, Yasna, and Vendidad. Avestan script was specially created in the Sasanian period to accurately record these sacred texts.
The Avestan alphabet is one of the most phonetically precise ancient scripts, with 53 letters representing subtle sound distinctions. It's written right-to-left and was designed specifically to preserve the exact pronunciation of sacred prayers. The script is related to Pahlavi (Middle Persian) script.
Perfect for: Zoroastrian religious studies, scholars of ancient Iranian languages, students of comparative religion, linguists studying Indo-Iranian languages, and anyone interested in this ancient and beautiful script.
