Simply type words as you would pronounce them: "pryvit" becomes "привіт", "dyakuyu" becomes "дякую", "knyha" becomes "книга".

Common letter mappings: a→а, b→б, v→в, g→ґ, d→д, e→е, z→з, i→і, y→и, k→к, l→л, m→м, n→н, o→о, p→п, r→р, s→с, t→т, u→у, f→ф, h→г

Multi-letter combinations: zh→ж, ch→ч, sh→ш, shch→щ, ts→ц, ya→я, yu→ю, ye→є, yi→ї, kh→х. For example: "zhyttya" → "життя"

The four letters that are not Russian: i→і, yi→ї, ye→є and g→ґ. Ukrainian writes і where Russian writes и, and its plain h is г — so h→г and g→ґ are two different letters rather than a spelling choice. "ukrayina" becomes "україна" and "kyyiv" becomes "київ".

Two more keys worth memorising: j→й and apostrophe (') for the soft sign (ь), both of which land at the end of words constantly. "dobryj den'" becomes "добрий день". Phonetic mode reads one whole word at a time and redraws it on every keystroke, so backspace takes back the English letter you typed rather than the Cyrillic it produced.
