Twenty-four runes, roughly 150 to 800 CE. The Elder Futhark takes its name from its first six runes — f, u, þ, a, r, k — much as the alphabet is named after alpha and beta. It was used across Germanic-speaking Europe and survives on a few hundred objects: weapons, brooches, combs, gold bracteates and memorial stones, rather than in books.
Why runes are angular. They were carved, not written. Straight verticals and diagonals cut cleanly into wood, bone, antler and stone, while horizontal strokes would vanish into the grain of a wooden stave. The shapes are built for a knife rather than a pen.
The Shift layer. English has more letters than the Elder Futhark has runes, so Shift carries the runes with no obvious Latin key. Shift+T gives ᚦ thurisaz, the thorn rune, Shift+N gives ᛜ ingwaz and Shift+E gives ᛇ eihwaz. Beside them sit Anglo-Saxon Futhorc additions — ᚫ aesc, ᚩ os, ᚳ cen, ᚸ gar, ᛣ calc, ᛠ ear, ᛥ stan and ᛡ ior.
Futhorc and Younger Futhark. After about 800 CE the tradition split. In England and Frisia the row grew to handle Old English vowels, reaching some thirty-three characters. In Viking-Age Scandinavia it shrank instead, to the sixteen runes of the Younger Futhark, so a single rune had to cover several sounds.
Punctuation and numbers. The comma key gives ᛫ single punctuation and the period key gives ᛬ multiple punctuation, with Shift swapping the two; the slash key gives the ᛭ cross. The digits stay Latin on purpose: the Elder Futhark had no numerals, and inscriptions spell numbers out.
A transliteration, not a translation. Typing English here maps letters to runes sound by sound; it does not turn your text into Old Norse or Old English. Does this translate English into runes?
No. It transliterates: each Latin letter is replaced by the rune with the closest sound, so the words stay English and only the letterforms change. A real translation would render your text in Old Norse or Old English first. For runic writing this transliteration is what almost everyone actually wants.

Why do some runes show as empty boxes?
Your device lacks a font covering the Unicode Runic block at U+16A0. Most modern systems include one, but older phones and some browsers do not. Installing a free Unicode font such as Noto Sans Runic, Segoe UI Historic or Junicode fixes it. The text itself is correct either way and pastes fine.
What is the difference between Elder Futhark, Younger Futhark and Futhorc?
They are stages of one tradition. Elder Futhark has twenty-four runes. From about 800 CE Scandinavian writing reduced to the sixteen-rune Younger Futhark, while English and Frisian writing expanded into the Futhorc, which reached roughly thirty-three characters. Why are the number keys still Latin digits?
Because the Elder Futhark had no numeral system. Runic inscriptions write numbers out as words or mark them with tallies, so there is nothing authentic to put on the digit row. Only the three runic punctuation marks — ᛫, ᛬ and ᛭ — are genuine, and they sit on the comma, period and slash keys.
