Buginese (Lontara) Typing Speed Test
Free Online Lontara Keyboard – Type the Buginese Script of South Sulawesi
Welcome to the Lontara keyboard online — the traditional script of the Buginese language (Basa Ugi) of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Our free virtual keyboard provides the full Lontara character set, including the vowel signs and the pallawa punctuation, so you can write in a script that almost no device supports natively. Nothing to install, and it works on any computer, tablet, or phone.
What Lontara is. Lontara is a Brahmic abugida, related in structure to the scripts of India and Southeast Asia: each consonant carries an inherent vowel, and a diacritic changes it. Its name comes from the lontar palm, whose leaves were used as writing material. It was used for Buginese and also for Makassarese, and its distinctive angular letterforms were shaped by the medium — strokes cut into palm leaf rather than drawn with a pen.
A script that expects you to think. Lontara has a famous peculiarity: traditionally it does not write word-final consonants, geminated consonants, or prenasalisation. A single written sequence can therefore be read several ways, and readers rely on context and familiarity to resolve it. This makes Lontara unusually demanding compared with most abugidas, and it is one reason accurate digital text matters — ambiguity in the script is enough without ambiguity in the encoding as well.
The Sureq Galigo. Buginese literature includes the Sureq Galigo, a creation epic recorded in Lontara that ranks among the longest literary works ever composed — by many counts longer than the Mahabharata. It survives in manuscripts that scholars are still editing, and it is the single strongest reason the script continues to be taught and studied.
Perfect for: Buginese speakers and learners, cultural and heritage organisations in South Sulawesi, teachers preparing script lessons, linguists and manuscript scholars, and anyone transcribing or quoting Lontara text who needs real Unicode characters rather than an image or a font hack.
Related keyboards: Buginese is also written in Latin script today — see the Buginese (Latin) keyboard, which provides ŋ, ñ and the vowel marks that orthography needs. Switch with the Layout dropdown above.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Lontara script?
Lontara is the traditional Brahmic abugida of South Sulawesi, used for Buginese (Basa Ugi) and Makassarese. Each consonant carries an inherent vowel that diacritics modify. The name comes from the lontar palm, whose leaves were the original writing material — which is why the letterforms are so angular.
Why is Lontara considered hard to read?
Because traditionally it does not write word-final consonants, geminated consonants, or prenasalisation. The same written sequence can be read in more than one way, and readers rely on context to resolve it. It is one of the more demanding abugidas for exactly this reason.
What is the Sureq Galigo?
A Buginese creation epic recorded in Lontara and one of the longest literary works ever composed — by many counts longer than the Mahabharata. It survives in manuscripts still being edited by scholars, and it is a major reason the script continues to be studied and taught.
Does this produce real Unicode characters?
Yes. Everything you type is standard Unicode from the Buginese block, not images or a custom font. That means your text can be searched, copied between applications, and read correctly by anyone whose system has a font covering the script.
Is Buginese still written in Lontara?
Latin script is more common for everyday use today, but Lontara remains in cultural, ceremonial, educational, and scholarly use, and there is active interest in teaching it. We provide a Buginese Latin keyboard as well for the modern orthography.
Is this Lontara keyboard free?
Yes, completely free. There is no cost, no registration, no account, and no limit on how much you type. The site is supported by advertising, which is what keeps the keyboard free to use for everyone.
Does it work on mobile phones and tablets?
Yes. The layout is fully responsive and works on Android and iOS phones, tablets, Chromebooks, Windows, and macOS. On a touchscreen you tap the characters directly, which makes it a practical way to type Lontara on a device with no Lontara keyboard installed.
Is my typing private?
Completely private. All processing happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never transmitted to a server, never stored, and never logged, so it is safe for personal and sensitive writing.
Where is Buginese spoken?
Mainly in South Sulawesi in Indonesia, by several million speakers, with Bugis communities elsewhere in Indonesia and in Malaysia and Singapore, reflecting a long maritime and trading history.
