Free Online Gurmukhi Keyboard – Type Punjabi ਪੰਜਾਬੀ Anywhere
Welcome to the Gurmukhi keyboard online (ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ)! Our free virtual keyboard provides the complete Gurmukhi script for Punjabi, including the vowel signs, the adhak, the Gurmukhi numerals, and the Ik Onkar and Khanda symbols. It runs in your browser on any computer, tablet, or phone, with nothing to install.
Why do Punjabi speakers need this? Punjabi is spoken by well over 100 million people, which places it among the world's most spoken languages, and it is written in two different scripts on either side of a border: Gurmukhi in Indian Punjab, where it is the official script, and Shahmukhi, a Perso-Arabic script, in Pakistani Punjab. A Punjabi speaker from Lahore and one from Amritsar may speak the same language and be unable to read each other's writing. The Punjabi diaspora — Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and the Gulf — is one of the largest in the world, and most of its devices have no Gurmukhi input at all.
The script and its origin. Gurmukhi was standardised in the 16th century by Guru Angad Dev, the second Sikh Guru; the name means roughly 'from the mouth of the Guru'. It has 35 base letters (painti) and is written left to right with a headline joining the letters. The Guru Granth Sahib is written in it, which gives the script a religious significance beyond its everyday use.
Beyond the letters. This layout includes the adhak (ੱ), which doubles the following consonant and changes meaning outright, along with tippi and bindi for nasalisation, and the Gurmukhi digits ੦ ੧ ੨ ੩ ੪ ੫ ੬ ੭ ੮ ੯. It also carries ੴ (Ik Onkar), the opening of the Mul Mantar, and ☬ (the Khanda) — characters people otherwise resort to pasting from elsewhere.
Perfect for: writing to family across the diaspora, school and university work, gurdwara and community notices, transcribing kirtan and scripture accurately, publishing and journalism in Punjabi, and typing Punjabi names and place names with their proper spelling.
Related keyboards: Gurmukhi shares its Brahmic structure with Devanagari, and Punjabi is also written in Perso-Arabic script — see the Urdu keyboard, which uses the same script family as Shahmukhi. Switch with the Layout dropdown above.
Your privacy is guaranteed – all typing happens 100% locally in your browser. Nothing you write is sent to a server, stored, or logged.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Gurmukhi?
Gurmukhi is the script used to write Punjabi in Indian Punjab, standardised in the 16th century by Guru Angad Dev, the second Sikh Guru. It has 35 base letters, is written left to right with a connecting headline, and is the script of the Guru Granth Sahib.
What is the difference between Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi?
They are two scripts for the same language. Gurmukhi is used in Indian Punjab; Shahmukhi, a Perso-Arabic script, is used in Pakistani Punjab. Speakers understand each other perfectly but often cannot read each other's writing, which is why the choice of keyboard matters.
What does the adhak (ੱ) do?
It doubles the consonant that follows it, and the difference is meaningful rather than decorative — dropping it produces a different word. It is on the layout directly, along with tippi and bindi for nasalisation.
Can I type ੴ and the Khanda?
Yes. Ik Onkar (ੴ), which opens the Mul Mantar, and the Khanda (☬) are both available on this keyboard. They are commonly needed for gurdwara notices, invitations, and religious text, and are otherwise awkward to find.
Are Gurmukhi numerals included?
Yes, the digits ੦ through ੯ are on the layout. They appear in traditional and religious texts and in formal writing where Latin numerals would be out of place.
Is this Gurmukhi keyboard free?
Yes, completely free. There is no cost, no registration, no account, and no limit on how much you type. The site is supported by advertising, which is what keeps the keyboard free to use for everyone.
Does it work on mobile phones and tablets?
Yes. The layout is fully responsive and works on Android and iOS phones, tablets, Chromebooks, Windows, and macOS. On a touchscreen you tap the characters directly, which makes it a practical way to type Gurmukhi on a device with no Gurmukhi keyboard installed.
Is my typing private?
Completely private. All processing happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never transmitted to a server, never stored, and never logged, so it is safe for personal and sensitive writing.
Where is Punjabi spoken?
Across Punjab in both India and Pakistan, by well over 100 million people, plus one of the world's largest diasporas — with major communities in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and the Gulf states.
Can I practise Punjabi typing speed?
Yes. Switch to Speed Test mode to practise with real Punjabi sentences and measure your words per minute and accuracy.
