The Gurmukhi Script
Gurmukhi (ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ) literally means "from the mouth of the Guru." It was standardized by the second Sikh Guru, Guru Angad Dev Ji. The script has: - 35 base consonants: ੳ ਅ ੲ ਸ ਹ ਕ ਖ ਗ ਘ ਙ ਚ ਛ ਜ ਝ ਞ ਟ ਠ ਡ ਢ ਣ ਤ ਥ ਦ ਧ ਨ ਪ ਫ ਬ ਭ ਮ ਯ ਰ ਲ ਵ ੜ - 10 vowel signs (matras) that attach to consonants - Additional characters for sounds from Persian and English
Like other Indic scripts, vowels attach to consonants as diacritical marks rather than standing alone (except at the start of words).
