Tamil is one of the world's oldest living languages, spoken by over 80 million people across Tamil Nadu (India), Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, and diaspora communities worldwide. The Tamil script is an abugida with 12 vowels, 18 consonants, and one special character (ஃ), combining to form 247 characters. AnyKeyboard lets you type Tamil easily in your browser.
Why Use an Online Tamil Keyboard
Setting up Tamil typing on your computer requires installing language packs, configuring input methods, and learning the InScript or Tamil99 keyboard layout. For occasional Tamil typing — sending messages to family, writing social media posts, or filling out forms — an online keyboard is much faster and simpler. No installation, no configuration, just open and type.

3. Combine characters: Tamil uses consonant-vowel combinations (like க + ா = கா). Our keyboard handles these combinations automatically as you type.

Understanding Tamil Script
Tamil script is unique among Indian scripts for its rounded, flowing appearance. Unlike Devanagari (Hindi), Tamil doesn't have aspirated consonants (like kh, gh, etc.) — the same letter represents both aspirated and unaspirated sounds depending on position. This actually makes the script simpler with fewer characters to learn.
The script writes consonant-vowel syllables as combined characters. For example, the consonant க (ka) combined with the vowel ி produces கி (ki). The pulli mark (்) removes the inherent vowel, giving you just the consonant: க் (k).
Common Tamil Phrases to Try
Practice typing these common phrases: வணக்கம் (vanakkam — hello), நன்றி (nandri — thank you), நான் நலமாக இருக்கிறேன் (naan nalamaga irukiren — I am fine), தமிழ் (Tamil — the language itself), நல்ல (nalla — good).
Tamil Digital Communication
Tamil has a vibrant online presence with millions of speakers using it daily on social media, messaging apps, and websites. The Tamil computing community has developed excellent Unicode support, and all modern platforms render Tamil script beautifully. Whether you're posting on Facebook, sending a WhatsApp message, or writing an email in Tamil, AnyKeyboard ensures your text looks perfect.
Tips for Tamil Typing
Tamil's character combinations can seem complex at first, but the logic is consistent: consonant + vowel marker = combined character. Start by memorizing the base consonants, then learn the vowel markers. Our on-screen keyboard shows all available combinations, making it easy to find the character you need even if you're new to Tamil typing.
